Biography

Hi, I’m James Rees – thanks for stopping by!

I’m a singer-songwriter, producer, and educator, originally from the West Midlands, but now based in Essex and London. Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I’m drawn to the DIY approach – My debut EP, Normal People, was recorded entirely on cassette tape in 2023, embracing that lo-fi, raw sound I’m so passionate about.

Over the years, I’ve released six singles and one EP independently through my own label, Broken Leg Records. I even create my own music videos, including a stop-motion animated video for my debut single, Circles, back in 2020. That track got some love from BBC Introducing, and since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at Glastonbury Festival in 2023 and 2024 – definitely a career highlight!

From 2017 to 2024, I was a founding member of the London band Pynch. During that time, I had the incredible opportunity to perform in the UK and across Europe, supporting bands like The Libertines. I played guitar on our Speedy Underground single Disco Lights, produced by the amazing Dan Carey, and contributed to our debut album, Howling at a Concrete Moon, which was released in 2023. I also had the privilege of working with Gordon Raphael, producer of The Strokes, as part of my time with Pynch. Though I’ve had to step back from the band due to other work commitments, I wish Spencer, Scott and Julianna all the best in their future endeavours.

When I’m not making music, I’m teaching it. With more than a decade of experience in music education, I’m currently the Head of the School of Music Production at ICMP. Before that, I was the Associate Dean of Music Production at BIMM University. I’m a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and hold a BA in Music Technology and Popular Music, plus an MA in Songwriting. I’m passionate about helping others explore their creativity and bring their musical ideas to life.

I’m inspired by artists like Mac DeMarco, Laura Marling, and in particular, Paul McCartney – his creativity and resourcefulness have always been a big influence on me. I even had the chance to present a paper about McCartney’s DIY approach at the International Beatles Symposium at Liverpool Hope University in March 2023, which was an fantastic experience.

So, whether you’re here to check out my music, videos, or research, I hope you enjoy exploring!
